about

This song really gets into the feel of the project. If this was released using old industry models, this would be the first single, hence the video.

That in mind, I feel really good about the blending, or should I say merging, of rhyme schemes, wordplay, and flow on this one. To match the free jazz feel, I adopted a stream of consciousness style, though it's also very intentional in what each piece means, but I'm quickly jumping from topic to topic. It's trying to display a wide range of emotions in a small amount of time, which is some times what life can be like when we get overwhelmed.

The song title has a few meanings. One, that this phase of my life is the time for making “records”. In relation to that, I also mean it tongue-in-cheek, poking fun at myself for it taking so long to get to this point, quite the opposite of a “record time”, but still I’m celebrating the win regardless, such as how the last verse ends, “let my chest rip through the ribbon”, making a reference to a time when the phrase “record time” might be used.

For the video, I gave the animator (AnimatorShama on Fiverr) some basic details, all largely based on the jazzy sample(s) on the song; 1)a car like a Jaguar E-Type (because of the Donald Byrd album cover), 2)A couple reference pictures of me (including the outfit), and 3)I wanted the video to end with me about to perform at the Cotton Club in Harlem.

Interestingly enough, some things on my mind that I didn’t convey, at least not directly, sort of happened anyway. Like, the idea that it’s not really clear what time period it is, with hints of everything from the Wild West to the modern times. Also, even some part of my personality where captured pretty good, as well as I intentionally asked for some elements that are in contrast to my lifestyle, including driving a a topless sports car…ha.

One thing that I’ve been trying to continually get better at is putting my full personality in the music, including my oddball sense of humor, which I think is captured in this video, and it’s even funnier that some of it came about even without the animator personally knowing me…I must just give off the oddball vibes inherently...

lyrics

Thoughts transition to words under prime conditions
Primal visions, rhymes that arouse suspicion
A mile a minute, I guess the direction’s intended
But then again, time and distance doesn’t measure commitment
Or consequences, we only catch the truth through glimpses
The proof’s expensive, cost your peace of mind, plus interest
My brain’s a prism, I went from pot to piston
You got to listen to fully comprehend my mission
I fought the system, sometimes all you gain is division
At times it feels like it was all for naught
But I sought for wisdom
NOT permission
My rules were written
By the same person riding the rhythm
I rhyme with conviction
Inaction is not a decision
It’s its own wormhole, which is not so forgiving
The fallen has risen, reborn with ten times the ambition
From crawling to sprinting, let my chest rip through the ribbon…
In record time, and now it’s on a record and spinning

In record time, I’m still expecting mine
I’m next in line while I’m still perfecting rhymes
In record time, I’m still expecting mine
I’m next in line while I’m still perfecting rhymes
In record time, I’m still expecting mine
I’m next in line while I’m still perfecting rhymes

Ending or beginning
Befriending or pretending
Giving or lending
Grimacing or grinning
Endlessly preparing, this is a planned flaw
I’m oversharing, in contrast to man’s law
So I ask ya’ll, what’s the last straw? What do you stand for?
The answers help me tell the coons from the panthers
A hint of what their stance is, a bettering of chances
Unsettling enhancements, improvements, advancements!
As sands shift, time is aligned with the planets
And the rhyme…walks a fine line like semantics
Childish antics are not the way I choose to emote
But I’ll admit, denying it's a slippery slope
The world’s cutthroat, I’m on my last dose of hope
Or so it seems until the next song gets wrote
The wrong approach is not the route I choose the most
When views oppose, I find a way to juxtapose
For friends, not foes, yeah, let’s just suppose
It’s a must that a bust these flows
My muse is prose

In record time, I’m still expecting mine
I’m next in line while I’m still perfecting rhymes
In record time, I’m still expecting mine
I’m next in line while I’m still perfecting rhymes
In record time, I’m still expecting mine
I’m next in line while I’m still perfecting rhymes
