about

"Turntable of Contents" is the second mix in the Applied Theories (aka Theories Of Origin) series by DJ Nikoless. Each mixtape in the series connects like a musical puzzle piece, and each mixtape focuses on a specific topic that I wanted to shine a spotlight on in Hip Hop DJ Culture.

The focus of "Turntable of Contents" speaks to my issue that DJs often focus so much on the beat, and don't care about the lyrics as much. And, I'm not naive, I know that certain type of records work in a club setting, and that's a whole different monster to tackle one day, but I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about DJs doing mixtapes, non-club gigs, radio mixshows, etc... I feel like too often most DJs don't seem to clear about respecting lyricism, in multiple ways.

So, this mixtape was about finding records that were dope and creative in both beats and rhymes. I also wanted to cover as many eras of Hip Hop as possible, so there is a unique blend of music from the early '80s, up until the year it was recorded in 2002. But, I also wanted to versatile in the styles of artist, hometowns they were from, and a few other pieces of criteria. The point was to make the statement that DJing can be cover a lot of ground and still be engaging. I'm not sure if I fully proved that, but that was the goal.

My partner on this mix is Shazam Bangles who has been killing it on the Chicago DJ scene for years, but back in 2002, this was his official debut on the mixtape scene, as he had mainly been a bedroom DJ for the years before this. It was also recorded in his house in Mount Prospect, IL using my Tascam 688 Midistudio 8-track recorder that I have had since 1990.

There were a few factors working against me while recording this mix, both some technical issues with the 8-track, but also some time constraints, because it was recorded right as I was preparing to move to Minneapolis. As a result, when I listen back, I hear mistakes and know the areas where I made compromise to get it done while dealing with those aforementioned challenges. But, I still like what this mix set out to accomplish, and it has some great moments still!
