THESE ARE INCOMPLETE DEMO SKETCHES + SOME PRACTICE VOCAL TAKES

Dedicated to DJ Maxx Maxx (R.I.P)

In '90 when my group Wildstyle broke up, I started working on a solo project. Initially, I thought, or rather hoped, that Wildstyle would get back together and I actually made some of these to encourage my previous partners to have the reunion, but that never happened.

Also, at the time I knew my modest home studio was way outdated with sampling being the staple production sound for years by then. I still only had the Roland TR-808, a Casio SK-5 "sampler" which was more of a kids toy, Alesis HR-16 drum machine, Two Shure SM58 mics, and the Tascam Porta Studio One 4-Track. So, I recorded most of these as sketches, with the intention to buy a sampler and properly produce all the songs later.

Not only that, but some of these I had completely forgot that I even recorded vocals for them, and only rediscovered them a couple years ago when I stumbled on a couple of unlabeled 4-track tapes. That's because I mainly recorded them simply as a means to memorize the lyrics. Basically, I often came up with lyrics on my 7 mile walk from work, so I didn't write them down. I would just get home and program a 808 beat and record them before I forgot them, then listen to it over and over again to memorize. That applies to tracks: 4, 7, 8 & 10.

Tracks 5 & 9 were recorded at 688 Studios in Waukegan, which was the house of KBATE, known for his work in the 90s as a producer/MC in Undaground Soulution.

Track 2 was recorded at Barnett Studios in North Chicago, owned by a local police officer who also had a label, that released music by local rap group, Full Deck. I was supposed to sign to his label and release a project, this project most likely, but I never followed up.

Track 1 (and by extension also 12) was produced by DJ Madd Maxx of Wildstyle. It's the last beat he gave me to rhyme on. I remember writing the verse to PT 1 pacing in the lobby of Lakehurst Movie Theater. The idea behind the concept of "Freestyle '90" was to show the two meanings of the word, with a written verse and then something off the head. The latter is showcased on the bonus song, track #12.

All the other tracks were recorded at my home studio, Rage Cage, which moved to three locations, all in Waukegan, over the period of working on this. Starting at Fox Crest apartments, my first place after moving out my parent house. Then, to Colonial Park apartments, which is technically in Park City. Then, I moved in with Black Man Zeke and his pops and eventually set up the studio in the back room off their garage, and once that I happened I had all sorts of rappers coming by to record demos.

That in mind, tracks 11 & 12 are done after I got my SP-12, Quadraverb, and Tascam 688 8-Track, and are some of the first things I did on that new equipment. That's why I'm just cycling through a few different effects while recording.
