about

All Instrumental Project!

I started using drum machines in 1985, first learning on the Boss DR-110 that my DJ and mentor, DJ Pill (of the Houserockers Nation) had. From there, I owned the Roland 505, Roland TR-808, Alesis HR-16, and eventually my SP-12, plus I used a borrowed MPC-60 fairly heavily in the early to mid 90s..

However, I never used MIDI before, until I sat down on Christmas Day 2021 to start teaching myself how to make beats with the Launchkey Mini MK MIDI controller I recently purchased.

I was pretty happy with that first beat (track #6), and so I decided to try again the following day, and then again the next day, and then I had three beats that I liked.

Once I finished the third, I realized if I kept that pace, I could have seven beats by the end of the week and drop a surprise instrumental EP on January 1st. And by a surprise, I mean to me…ha. So,I decided I’d try to see if I could make it happen.

It was still early enough on Monday when I decided that, so I kept working for a few hours, and to my actual surprise, by the end of the day Tuesday (early Wednesday morning technically), I had all 7 beats for the EP. Well, clarity in mind, it’s 6 beats and a “noise” outro.

These were all made using only the stock sounds in Ableton (Drums, Instruments, Effects), controlled by the Launchkey Mini. Then, I did all the arrangements live by running a 8 bar loop, and simply shutting things off/on or soloing things, while recording what I was doing directly into Izotope.

Then, I bounce it from there, back into Ableton to add a “mastering effect” and maybe EQ a bit, for the finals. I’m sure there’s a way to do all that in Ableton, and eventually I’ll learn that I suppose.

I just had fun with these, and went wherever felt right in the moment. I found comfort in noise, imperfections, experimentation, and things of the sort.

I didn’t have anything or anyone particular in mind when making these beats, but listening back, these are (what I refer to as) my Hindsight Inspirations: Shafiq Husayn, Divine Styler, HPRZM, Thavius Beck, Omid, Plain Ole Bill, Beastie Boys (Hello Nasty album production), Bigg Jus, Bilal Bashir, Mantronix, and others whose names are eluding me presently…

Truthfully, it’s not the sound of production I was intending to make for me to rhyme over, so I’m still tweaking that sound, but I still want to explore further down this road as well.

Lastly, I have no intention of doing my own art in the future, and I certainly shouldn’t try that’s for sure. But, for side projects like these, that I decide to release at the last minute, I’m limited in my options. This image is just a lazy collage of free “abstract” prints in Canva. I originally was going to title this project “Robot In Lotus Position”, and then changed it to “Caravaggio In Pastel”, but once I listened to it in full for the first time, sequenced, I wasn’t sold on either of those. But, in the brief moment that I had that secondary option, I was thinking about doing some collage of Caravaggio’s art and then manipulating it with some pastel overlays, but that seemed like a lot of work for someone who never made a real collage, and has extremely limited “design skills”...near zero perhaps. So, this was my replacement idea.
