about

I moved to Illinois in December of 1985, in my last few months at 15 years old, and leaving behind my rap group, the 3D Crew a.k.a 3rd Dimension in Fort Riley, KS.

I never wanted to be a solo artist, but I knew it might take some time to meet new people to team up with. Mind you, up to this point, I was a rarity, in the places I had lived at least, for having kids my age who were rhyming, as it was mostly the kids who were 4-5 years older than us. But, moving to North Chicago changed that.

However, I was really active writing, so I started working on solo material in the meantime, and that lead to finishing the lyrics and basic plans to two albums; Rough Rhyme Ruler (’86) and Intellectually Speaking In A B-Boy’s Way (“87), but I didn’t really have a way to record them, or even beats to record them too, as instrumental were just becoming more common to get on the 12”s at that time. But I would record them acapella to tape, and I still have those recordings for reference, as well as all of the originally rhyme books they were wrote in.

But, by ’87, I had found some like-minded peers, and we formed a group, first starting as Rose Productions, but then our founder, Vernon Manor a.k.a Deftone the Hard Disser, fell back from MCing, and the remaining three members of the group formed Wildstyle; DJ Madd Maxx, LA the Mutilator, and the Amazing MC Coolie (a.k.a AMC).

So, once Wildstyle was formed, I put all of this solo material to the side, and just considered it writing practice.

However, even during the time when I wasn’t recording music anymore (circa 2001-2022), I still had this dream of one day completing all of the songs I worked on in the 80s and 90s, if only for myself to hear what it may have sounded like.

I wound up really liking how this came out, so decided to share it officially.

Fitting to the time, it is pretty much 99% all braggadocios battle rap, the one song that is not that, is essentially the story of how I became a battle rappers, told thru the lens of the history of the 3D Crew.

I tried my best to capture the spirit and sound of 1987 in this album. Before I recorded anything, I spent months listening ta all my old freestyle tapes I recorded in bedrooms and garages back then. Reading thru stacks of notebooks of rhymes I wrote then, collecting all the album verses. Reviewing all my photo albums, year books, and anything that could help spark the memories of what the times, as well as what myself was like, back then, including dedicating a couple months of only listening to music from 1986-1987, I like to consider myself a method actor of rap…or something of the sort.

Fresh for ’87 you suckers! And, you good peoples also…
