Kunaki duplicates discs. Duplication has made major strides over the last few years. Today mediocre duplication is superior to bad replication. And superior duplication is better than mediocre replication. Lastly, superior duplication is every bit as good as the best replication.

about

DJ Criminal does the scratches on this project. I've known DJ Criminal for quite some time. When I was still pretty brand new to moving to Minneapolis and working for Rhymesayers, DJ Criminal was, I believe, our first intern (at least since I came there in 2002).

When I did my "This Is Where You Got It From" Double MIX CD in 2004 (under the name DJ Nikoless), DJ Criminal helped engineer and tweak it in Cool Edit Pro for me.

From there, I've watched him continue to make dope music as a producer, pull of great collaborations with MCs, and continue to showcase his skills as a scratch technician, including his awesome videos of scratching on portable turntables around the world!

All of that in mind, DJ Nikoless makes a return here to do the "Get Down" scratches on this song, an ode to what I described above.

As for the lyrics, one of the ways I like to write, and a part of the afore mentioned workshops I"m developing, is do improv and then editing. I feel as if improv is the way to tap into the most natural, honest, and truest version of self. When I don't know what to write about, how to flow to a certain beat, or even if I'm in the mood to write at all...I can answer any of those questions, and more via improv.

This one I keep pretty much as the raw improv. It's done in sections of 4 bars mostly, though somewhere longer. I'd just improv 4 bars (or more), and stop. Play it back a few times, and think about direction, not so much actual words, and then start recording again, and pick up the new improv where the last stopped.

One tell of the improv is that I use the word "down" 3 times in the first 10 bars. When I noticed that my first thought was, "that's what the editing is for", but since I don't edit until I'm completely finished, I kept going, and without me consciously thinking of it, the improv went into some sports references. Once I noticed that, the name "3rd Down" came about, and I didn't edit the three mentions of the word.

Another tell about the improv is that as it goes on, the rhymes get better, and it's even more pronounced here because of the stop-n-go method I'm using, but in general, in a good improv, if I get in a zone, it will get at least gradually better regardless. I just wanted to capture the improv method. I only did some minor editing on the second-half part of the verse. But that mostly just swapping out words for something with less syllables, or avoiding words I've been saying too often. That's my biggest problem in improv, I tend to recycle a of words, and thus as a result also similar or duplicate rhyme schemes, but working on a workshop for that too, which has been actually working.

Once I have the workshops finished I will offer them via a Patreon, or similar site, for anyone who want to take them, and this isn't just for people who want to be MCs or get better at MCing. These things can apply to other things in life as well.

lyrics

Yeah, I’m showing grace in my trails,
Patient but I’ll stand my ground, plant feet down
Hmmm…just me and my family now
Ban me? HOW!? I don’t even plan to be around
See, I’m bound for a place where each face has smiles
Including mine, on my way, and my pace allows
Me to race for miles, yeah, embrace the clouds…
Let me thoughts bounce around
Then rain down to keep me aligned with the ground
That’s not profound, just the way that I get down
I’ll stop your run, all strikes once I hit mound
How that sound? I don’t even play the game
I laid the blame, still things just stayed the same
I preyed the plains, searching for some needful things
Some people bring more drama with their whole routine
I know, I’ve scene, it’s obscene
I blow off steam, but that’s how I lost my sheen
I’m not a machine
Nerve endings feels SO extreme
My love is deeply, solely, there is no in-between
When I was 18 left home to follow a dream
I guess I finally made it if you see this song on your SCREEN
A long journey, slowly on a balance beam
Challenging to say the least, let some pressure release…
Then we convene and say peace
Peace.
